Okay, so I'm guilty of being in love, but can you blame me? I was a young " rock star" at the time when I met him. But if you ask me, he was really the star, in my heart anyway. I was only 25 years old at the time; I was doing a concert in New York City. He was in the front row; he stood out from everyone else. I guess you could say he was a quote UN-quote " prep" he was only 24 but acted very much older. His name was Brian, country born and raised kind of boy. Lord knows as I look back on it now I was crazy when I allowed him to come backstage that night. I was all-full of sweat and was totally a mess. Which made me a little curious when he walked up to me and smiled. " You look amazing, he said. I felt like rolling my eyes and asking him if he hit his head on the way in there by chance. But before I could even get a word out, our eyes met. As the sweat poured from my forehand into my eyes burning so bad I can still feel the pain to this day when I close my eyes. " Is this a bad time?" He asked with his voice in such a low tone it was like he was whispering. Like he was afraid if he spoke to loud someone was going to punish him. I couldn't help but laugh, he reminded me so much of myself when I was in grade school. So shy and afraid, but at the same time I could tell he had so much to say to me. So much to talk about it inside, like he was a man with so many secrets it was unbelievable Maybe that's why I decided to go for a walk with him through central park. " You did a good job tonight. I mean the show it just blew me away. You're so amazing, and the way you look onstage it just blows me away." As he spoke those words I began to feel something, I can't really describe it. Maybe I just had that feeling because I had never received a compliment throughout the past 25 years of my life. " Thanks, but please don't take this wrong, but you don't look like the type of person that would listen to my music." I said, I felt my whole body shiver. Maybe it was because of the cold October winds blowing, but in my heart I knew why I had shivered. I felt like I was talking to an angel. Okay, so I wasn't always a perfect Christian. Even though I believed in my own unique religion, I still knew an angel when I saw one. But as I looked deep into those blue eyes I realized something. The man that stood before me had been scared, no, not physically or mentally but deep down in the shadows of this mans soul he had been choked, not the type of choke where you can't breath. The type where someone reaches into your heart and squeezes so hard you feel as if you can't go on. " Oh, forgive me I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Brian." He said with a bright smile. I looked at carefully, I tried to remember the last time I had smiled. God it had been so long. " Oh, well Brian. It's very nice to meet you." I said. I can't believe what I was saying I had never once in my life acted to polite to someone. " Well I know you probably have better things to do then hang around with a fan. But Alanis, You're amazing. I know I look like an All-American boy who has nothing better to do but read from the bible. I'm not like that, your songs relate to my so much. It's like they're my songs. I guess what I'm trying to say is thank you. I have to admit. In the back of my mind I didn't know what to say. It was like that whole time he had been reading my mind. Maybe I was wrong, not all men are foolish, maybe I could actually get to know this guy and trust him. I tried to act thank full to his compliment but I've never been thank full for something in my life see. I just take things as they come and if they go well then let's just see if tomorrow brings something better. Why, I don't know what to say. I think that's the greatest compliment I've ever received. Brian this isn't usually like me but would you like to, um.. Come by the studio with me tomorrow I have some new material to record and well since you're a fan Id like you there to give be your opinion. His eyes lit up, it's like they were glowing burning with desire, Of course, I don't mean to sound weird but Alanis, this is an honor I couldn't help but laugh. I didn't mean to it just came out that way. Maybe that's why I was always written as the girl who takes fame for granted in newspapers. But the truth is back then I didn't care about the fame. I could live with it or live without it. All that mattered to me was making music. And yes, I was criticized for throwing away the fan mail, but I did that for a reason. I was scared to read the letters. I guess Brian was either to polite or didn't mind that I laughed at him. I guess its safe to say neither of us knew what was about to happen the next day, but honestly Im glad I invited him that night. Or else I might not have such a great story to tell here today. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
